ARRANGEMENT: Series arranged chronologically by filing date. For indexing purposes, the petitions have been assigned numbers.

BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE: During the period of the Court of Appeals, 1826-1836, the qualifications required of prospective attorneys were stipulated in S.C. Statute 1812(5)677, which only required a candidate to be a citizen of the state, have attained his majority, offer testimonials of his morality and good character, and the legal examination outlined in S.C. Statute 1796(5)289.

SUMMARY SCOPE NOTE:
This series consists of petitions addressed to the justices of the Court of Appeals in session at Columbia and Charleston seeking permission to practice before the various courts of law. Information generally includes the applicant's professional and educational background, signed statements attesting to applicant's character and educational qualifications, the type of court before which the candidate is petitioning to practice, and a signed notation by a justice that the petition had been accepted. One folder at the beginning of the series contains the Feb. 17, 1835, appointment of a committee to examine applicants.
