SUMMARY SCOPE NOTE: Legislative resolutions were generally used to denote the adoption of a motion the subject of which did not properly constitute a statute. Many resolutions appointed various state officials or directed them to take certain actions. Other resolutions expressed opinion as to some matter, or constituted an alteration of rules or a vote of thanks or censure. The General Assembly adopted resolutions by vote. Resolutions, like other papers of the antebellum General Assembly, dealt with a very wide variety of subjects affecting most aspects of the lives of the state's citizens. In form, resolutions tend to be brief. Most are less than a page in length. Often they were dated and signed by the legislator who introduced them.
