ARRANGEMENT:  Series arranged chronologically by date of escape.

 

BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE:  Legislation passed by the SC General Assembly in  1947 (Act No. 202, 1947, S.C. Acts 193) made it a misdemeanor for a prisoner to escape.  This act also provided that not more than two additional years confinement could be added to a prisoner's sentence as punishment.

 

SUMMARY SCOPE NOTE:  This series consists of two separate lists of escapees.  The first consists of prisoners who had escaped from the state penitentiary between 1924-1935 and who were still at large in 1949.  Information includes prisoner number, name, race, sex, date admitted, age when list was compiled  (1949), sentence, and crime.  The second list consists of prisoners who escaped from the state penitentiary in 1947-1948.  Information includes prisoner number, name, county in which escaped, date of escape, date of  recapture (if applicable), and amount of  additional prison time added to sentence.
