SUMMARY SCOPE NOTE: This series contains three separate items relating to prison riots. The first, a report on
the riot of August 11, 1973 at the Central Correctional Institute
(CCI), consists of a detailed summary of the event and statements taken from Dept. of Corrections employees.
The second item is a CCI riot plan dated March 1974 (revised
February 1979) which contains a list of emergency contact personnel and a list of procedures and responsibilities for
staff members in the event of a riot.
The third item is a report entitled, "Kirkland Correctional
Officer Survey: an Analysis of Aftereffects from the April 1,
1986 Riot" which summarizes a survey given to corrections
officers involved in the 1986 riot. During the riot, some corrections officers were taken hostage by the rioting
inmates. Survey questions relate to the officer's physical and
psychological reactions to the events. The report also
contains statistical information about the inmates involved
in the riot, copies of articles concerning the effects of stress
on corrections officers, and copies of newspaper articles
about the riot and its aftermath.
