SUMMARY SCOPE NOTE:  This series consists of reports to the General Assembly produced annually by the superintendent of the state penitentiary and dept. of corrections.  Reports cover the fiscal years, 1884-1885, 1886-1889, 1938-1939, 1989-1990 through 1992-1993, and 1994-1995 through 1999-2000.  The 1884-1889 reports contain a narrative report of the superintendent and board of directors, a report of the clerk giving monthly lists of receipts and disbursements, a report of the captain of the guard consisting of various statistical information about the prison population, a chaplain's report, and a surgeon's report.  The 1938-1939 and 1989-2000 reports consist of a short narrative of the year's activities and mostly statistical information concerning the operation of the state prison system and the inmate population.
