BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE: In 1960 the South Carolina General Assembly established the Dept. of Corrections and its governing Board of Corrections to revamp the State Penitentiary and the state's prison system. The Board was composed of seven members, six of whom were appointed by the governor with the advice and consent of the Senate. The governor was the seventh member serving in an ex officio capacity. Appointments were for a term of six years, and the terms were staggered to promote continuity.

The Government Restructuring Act of 1993 abolished the Board of Corrections and made the Dept. of Corrections one of the twelve cabinet agencies reporting directly to the governor.
