520 SUMMARY SCOPE NOTE: This series consists of copies of two histories of the Dept. of Corrections. The earlier of the two was compiled by Capers O. Brazzell and issued by the department itself as South Carolina Department of Corrections; A History in 1969. The other, a photocopy apparently obtained for reference, is John Charles Thomas's 1983 University of South Carolina masters thesis, "The Development of 'an Institution': The Establishment and First Years of the South Carolina Penitentiary, 1795-1881."
