ARRANGEMENT: Series arranged chronologically by year, thereunder by type of scholarship, and thereunder by Congressional district.

BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE: Although the Medical College of the State of South Carolina was chartered as a private institution, the college received periodic financial assistance from the state. In 1853, the General Assembly agreed to give the Medical College $10,000 with which to purchase "anatomical preparations" in exchange for the college agreeing thereafter "to receive and instruct free of charge, one student from each congressional district to be selected by the governor."

The Medical College was transferred to state control and reorganized by S.C. Statute 1913(28)188, section four of which authorized the governor to appoint two students (one each to the departments of medicine and pharmacy) from each congressional district to attend the college tuition- free. The scholarships were for one academic year, with no guarantee of renewal. The scholarships were abolished by S.C. Statute 1951(47)520.
